11+ preparation

Thoughtful preparation for the 11+.

The 11+ is more than a set of practice papers. Successful preparation begins with a clear understanding of your child's current abilities, the demands of their target schools and the time available to prepare. ThorntonbyChelsea offers individual 11+ tuition designed to develop the knowledge, reasoning and confidence students need to approach assessments with greater assurance.

Preparation shaped around your child

Some students need to strengthen core English and mathematics; others benefit from reasoning practice, comprehension, written expression or greater familiarity with timed assessments. We identify the areas that matter most rather than treating every child as though they need the same course.

What 11+ tutoring can cover

Depending on the relevant schools and assessments, tuition may include mathematics, English comprehension, vocabulary, creative or extended writing, verbal reasoning, non-verbal reasoning and examination technique. Not every school tests every component; preparation should follow confirmed admissions requirements.

A measured approach to progress

Our tutors help students practise carefully, review errors and build independence. As the examination approaches, targeted practice and timed work can become more prominent, while maintaining an appropriate balance with school, family life and confidence.

How we work

We begin by understanding the student: their current attainment, confidence, academic priorities and the expectations of their school or target examination. We then recommend an appropriate tutor and a focused programme of support. Teaching is adapted as the student progresses, with communication that keeps parents informed without creating unnecessary administration.

Online and London-based tuition

One-to-one tuition is available online and, subject to tutor availability, in person in London. The right format depends on the student, subject and timetable.

Frequently asked questions

When should my child begin 11+ preparation?

It depends on their starting point and the schools under consideration. Year 4 can provide time to develop foundations; Year 5 often requires a more structured timetable. We recommend an individual assessment of needs rather than a universal start date.

Do you prepare for specific independent schools?

We can discuss preparation in relation to the published assessment requirements of schools you are considering. Requirements change, so the current school guidance should always be checked.

Is tuition online or in person?

We offer online tuition and may be able to arrange in-person sessions in London, depending on tutor availability.

Can you help if we are unsure which schools to apply to?

An initial consultation can clarify your priorities and identify where further school research or admissions advice may be helpful.

Let's discuss the right next step

An initial conversation helps us understand your child's needs, discuss realistic priorities and recommend the most suitable next step. There is no one-size-fits-all programme.
