Year 4 · 11+
Build strong foundations in Year 4.
Year 4 offers an opportunity to strengthen the foundations that later 11+ preparation depends on, without making every week feel like an examination countdown. Our one-to-one support is designed to develop fluency, curiosity and confidence while identifying any gaps early.
Why Year 4 can be a useful starting point
An earlier start can create space to consolidate reading, vocabulary, mathematical understanding and problem-solving. It can also help families understand whether their child would benefit from more focused support before Year 5. Starting early does not mean increasing pressure early.
What we focus on in Year 4
Sessions may develop comprehension, clear written expression, arithmetic fluency, multi-step mathematics and age-appropriate reasoning. We prioritise understanding over repetitive test drilling, adjusting the pace to the student.
Preparing for the next stage
As a child approaches Year 5, we can review their progress, the schools being considered and the relevant entrance requirements. This provides a more informed basis for deciding whether, when and how to introduce exam-specific preparation.
How we work
We begin by understanding the student: their current attainment, confidence, academic priorities and the expectations of their school or target examination. We then recommend an appropriate tutor and a focused programme of support. Teaching is adapted as the student progresses, with communication that keeps parents informed without creating unnecessary administration.
Online and London-based tuition
One-to-one tuition is available online and, subject to tutor availability, in person in London. The right format depends on the student, subject and timetable.
Frequently asked questions
Is Year 4 too early for 11+ tuition?
Not necessarily, but the purpose matters. For many children, Year 4 is best used to build core skills and confidence rather than undertake intensive mock examinations.
Does my child need to know their target schools already?
No. It helps to know your broad preferences, but foundational English and maths support can begin while you investigate schools.
How often should Year 4 tuition take place?
Frequency depends on the child's needs and existing commitments. We can recommend an appropriate starting arrangement after an initial discussion.
Can support continue into Year 5?
Yes, subject to availability. The focus can evolve from foundational work towards the specific requirements and timings of relevant assessments.
