School admissions

Individual preparation for independent school admissions.

Applying to an independent school can involve several distinct stages, from understanding admissions requirements to preparing for written assessments and interviews. ThorntonbyChelsea provides individual academic preparation informed by the schools, entry points and expectations relevant to your child.

Understand the admissions pathway

The first step is to establish which schools and entry points you are considering, what each school currently requires and the relevant deadlines. Assessment formats differ, and published school information should guide the preparation plan.

Academic entrance preparation

Our tutors can help students strengthen the English, mathematics and reasoning skills required for relevant entrance assessments. Work is tailored to the student's current level and the format of the assessments they are preparing for.

Interviews and wider readiness

Where interviews form part of the process, preparation can focus on thoughtful communication, discussing interests and approaching unfamiliar questions with confidence. We do not coach children to recite scripted personalities or promise a particular admissions outcome.

Guidance without guarantees

Admissions decisions rest with individual schools. Our role is to help families understand the preparation required and help students approach each stage as well prepared as possible.

How we work

We begin by understanding the student: their current attainment, confidence, academic priorities and the expectations of their school or target examination. We then recommend an appropriate tutor and a focused programme of support. Teaching is adapted as the student progresses, with communication that keeps parents informed without creating unnecessary administration.

Online and London-based tuition

One-to-one tuition is available online and, subject to tutor availability, in person in London. The right format depends on the student, subject and timetable.

Frequently asked questions

Do you guarantee admission to a particular school?

No. Admissions decisions are made by schools and depend on factors beyond tuition. We provide preparation, not guarantees.

Can you help with 11+ and other entry points?

We can discuss the relevant entry point and arrange appropriate academic support where we have suitable expertise and availability.

Do all independent schools use the same examinations?

No. Assessment content, interviews and timelines vary. Families should confirm current requirements directly with each school.

Can you advise on choosing schools?

We can discuss your priorities and preparation needs. Any broader school-selection advisory service should be agreed and scoped separately.

Let's discuss the right next step

An initial conversation helps us understand your child's needs, discuss realistic priorities and recommend the most suitable next step. There is no one-size-fits-all programme.
